My Favourite Painting - Terrasse du café le soir, Place du forum, Arles

Cafe Terrace at Night, also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, is an oil painting executed by the Dutch artist Vincent Willem van Gogh on an industrially primed canvas of size 25 (Toile de 25 figure) in Arles, France, mid September 1888. The painting is not signed, but described and mentioned by the artist in his letters on various occasions - and, as well, there is a large pen drawing of the composition which originates from the artist's estate.

Still today, visitors of the site can take the place at the north eastern corner of the Place du Forum where the artist set up his ease. He looked south towards the artificially lighted terrace of the popular coffee house as well as into the enforced darkness of the rue leading up to the building structure far back comprising the town house (to the left, not pictured) and, beyond this structure, the tower of a former church (now Musée lapidaire). Towards the right, Van Gogh indicated a shop lighted as well, and some branches of the trees surrounding the place—but he omitted the remainders of the roman monuments just aside this little shop. Van Gogh used oil paint on canvas  and the painting is 81 × 65.5 cm (32" × 26"). The painting is currently at the Kröller-Müller Museum in OtterloNetherlands.

After finishing Cafe Terrace at Night, Van Gogh wrote a letter to his sister expressing his enthusiasm:

I was only interrupted by my work on a new painting representing the exterior of a night café . On the terrace there are small figures of people drinking. An immense yellow lantern illuminates the terrace, the facade, the side walk and even casts light on the paving stones of the road which take a pinkish violet tone. The gables of the houses, like a fading road below a blue sky studded with stars, are dark blue or violet with a green tree. Here you have a night painting without black, with nothing but beautiful blue and violet and green and in this surrounding the illuminated area colours itself sulfur pale yellow and citron green. It amuses me enormously to paint the night right on the spot. Normally, one draws and paints the painting during the daytime after the sketch. But I like to paint the thing immediately. It is true that in the darkness I can take a blue for a green, a blue lilac for a pink lilac, since it is hard to distinguish the quality of the tone. But it is the only way to get away from our conventional night with poor pale whitish light, while even a simple candle already provides us with the richest of yellows and oranges.

London Bridge is...

My MIL is rather humorous. She reminded me not to sing "London Bridge is falling down" song while coaxing Isaac to sleep from 20-27 April. Reason being we will be housing 2 guests and they are from the UK! I had a good laugh and created a mental note for that. Uncle Jio & Aunty Mary came to see Isaac, how blessed. Jio is hubby's uncle (MIL's brother) and has been living in London since sliced bread. They have been going round the world for almost 3 months and Calgary is their last stop. We made them prawn mee and some Chinese home cooked food. In return they made us Roast Beef with Yorkshire pudding, scones, lemon cake and apple cake. Yummy I tell you! And with that they devirginised my oven. During the weekend we took them to Banff (where else?) and Drumheller, the land of dinosaurs. We had a great time! I was rather exhausted being the hostess. Had to wake early to prepare breakie and lunch and tea (yes! English really love tea with cake or scones) and dinner. Having said that, I enjoyed their company very much. Uncle Jio named Isaac "Mr Smiley". Needless to explain why. They have two kids our age (Rebecca & Jonathan). In the Bible Isaac's wife was Rebecca. That makes us in-laws! LOL. On their last day before they head for the airport, Aunty Mary surprised me with a thank you gift. It was the Camellia Corelle 16-piece set I had my eyes on the day before! These remarkable plates are chip and break resistant with a 3-year warranty. Rumour has it that they cost an arm and a leg back in Malaysia. Even so, I told myself to wait for sale as it is CAD51.99. An angel heard me. The angel is she. Oh how I love my plates! Not forgetting our dearest Aunty Mary of course! Can't wait for our next dinner party. I wanna use them, my best china todate. Right after they left, London Bridge is falling down song is heard again, loud and clear.

10mos and 10kgs

My baobei is 10mos now. He is as charming as ever. Prince Charming may have to stand aside...sorry this is a bias Mom writing. He is Daddy's best playmate with piggyback rides and peek-a-boos that often end up with loud laughs from both of them. He kisses me on the lips with mouth open wide as if he wanna swallow my pouted lips. He calls out Mum-Mum when he wants more honey biscuits. He calls me Mama when he needs a cuddle or just because. He calls out for Papa when he wants a play or two. He cruises along the leather sofa to get from point a to b. He closes the book as I'm reading to him, telling me not to continue. He crawls swiftly to find toys. He screams (ear-piercing kind) to gather attention. He loves company. He loves Veggie Tales' theme song. Brocolli, celery, blah blah blah. He loves American Idol. He claps on victorious moments or when he is jolly or when he meant to say goodbye. He gives reciprocal Hi-5(s). He understands the consequence of falling and turns his back to get down the steps. He removes socks and shoes in a lightning. Occasionally he will indicate to us with a Mmm-mmm when he is done with a big poop. And yes I mean BIG. Above all, he smiles and melts. He is the hearthrob to many. He is my baby. My gift from the Almighty. My all.

Blue Cart

Calgary's recycling system turns over a new leaf starting April 2009. For those people who is lazy as me will find this service very helpful and encourages recycling. I consider myself ignorant when it comes to the triangle arrow sign but thanks to Blue Cart, I am now a recycler (is there such a word?) and am proud of it. My weekly trash has decreased tremendously when I discovered the amount of recyclables in my household. I urge you to care for the environment of our children. I urge you to take recycling as part of your life. It's fun when you contribute to the better of Mother Nature.

Blue Cart service will collect paper, cans, cardboard, glass, plastic containers and plastic bags from single-family residences. Collection is weekly on the same day and general location as garbage (back lane or front curb). Households receiving the service will be charged $8 per month.

How to prepare materials:

  • Clean items of food and other residue (so much work!)
  • Place all recyclables in the cart - no sorting is required
  • It's okay to leave labels on metal food cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, etc. (thank goodness)
  • Remove lids and caps and place in cart
  • Place metal food can lids inside can or leave attached
  • Material shouldn't be in bags, with two exceptions:
    • Bundle plastic bags into one plastic bag and tie handles
    • Place shredded paper in a clear plastic bag and tie handles.

Baby Blues

I have been an avid fan of comics. I often wished I'm a cartoonist but unfortunately God din really agree. Since years back I have been following Baby Blues from NST. I used to have a huge book of Baby Blues newspaper cut-outs. Day after day, week after week without fail. I would buy NST just for comics. That crazy. I even wrote to NST asking them where can I get Baby Blues and if they have the contact! Now that I recall, I must admit I was kinda aggressive. As expected, NST replied with no good news. Then one fine day many moons ago, as I was casually browsing thru Borders at Wheelock Place along Orchard Road in Singapore, I saw something waving at me from one of the racks. That something made my heart skipped a beat. It was a Baby Blues scrapbook! It was such a joyous moment I almost jumped so high that it could made a hole in the ceiling. Since then, my collection started. Their latest scrapbook no. 24 MY SPACE is the latest to conquer. I shall be diligently checking at COLES for its arrival. I am proud to own the entire scrapbook and treasury collection. This McPherson household has brought much laughter to my life as it is much needed. Thanks to Darryl, Wanda, Zoe, Hammie & Wren McPherson. Having a baby need not be blue after all.

I Drove..!!

Big deal rite? It is because when we first landed I didn't have my International License and was preggo and was snowy and had a baby. So all sorts of reasons to back my driving-free days. During our last trip back to Malaysia, I had my IL done and it cost me a whooping RM150! So I told myself I must make use of it and make the money well spent. While hubby was on a short business trip to Caroline, I made a point to drive. I took Isaac and MIL along (for some support) and we headed for the neighbourhood Superstore and voila! it was a success. Let me enlighten you that it's left hand drive and everything seems "terbalik" for first timers who is so used to right hand drive for more than a decade. A few days later, I took the car alone to Superstore, Winners, Zellers, Sobeys and Rexall. Phew.......oops I was honked at a junction. Almost p*** in my pants! I'm gonna drive out again tomorrow. Gotta redeem a green box from Superstore & return a packet of flour & baking powder to Sobeys. Hopefully it doesn't snow. I have yet to master snow-driving.

Somersaulting

According to the Philipinos, when a child does this particular act, it means they are asking for companionship or siblings. Isaac has been doing this on his own, regularly without anyone teaching him. As for now, I will choose to ignore the belief and settle for the fact that he likes his world upside down and is enjoying peek-a-boo in a new light. Sorry baby, Mama is not ready to fulfil your request as yet. Try again ya. :D

Forever Remembered

You left us 6 years ago. We hoped it was a joke. You left a legacy behind your demise. You left us wondering why you took your own life. You left us remembering every sordid details about you, your life, your leaving us. You left us, yes but you live deep in us, within our hearts. We miss you Leslie...
